Illinois State Senator Terry Link (D- Waukegan) has sponsored a bill that would give pregnant women in Illinois more work-place rights than federal law now allows. The vote on Tuesday was an approval and the bill will now go to the Illinois House for discussion. As a former small business owner, I don’t agree with this proposed amendment of the Illinois Human Rights Act on how businesses need to treat pregnant women.
SB1122 Synopsis As Introduced:
“Amends the Illinois Human Rights Act. Makes a technical change in a Section concerning the Human Rights Commission.
Replaces everything after the enacting clause. Amends the Illinois Human Rights Act. Adds an employment discrimination prohibition that provides that it is a civil rights violation for any employer to refuse to hire, to segregate, or to act with respect to recruitment, hiring, promotion, renewal of employment, selection for training or apprenticeship, discharge, discipline, tenure or terms, privileges or conditions of employment on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. Effective immediately.”
When one owns a small business, every employee is an important cog in the workplace machine. If one of them decides to get pregnant, it is a personal choice and any sacrifices should be borne solely by them, not by their fellow employees left back at the office to do their work for them.
The Daily Herald wrote, “Chris Lauzen, an Aurora Republican, said he fully supports women's rights, but Link's proposal opens too many possibilities for false claims of discrimination. Lauzen said an employer who chooses a more qualified candidate over a less qualified pregnant woman could be unfairly sued under Link's proposal.
‘When I hear pieces of legislation like this, I put myself back in the desk in my office interviewing people,’ Lauzen said. ‘And I say I am sure, I'm positive, I would not offer a job under these circumstances because I will not take the risk of someone suing me.’ “
Sometimes it seems that government in Illinois is doing everything it can to hinder economic growth by making it difficult for small businesses to succeed by screwing employers. Now they are adding another sexual position and it’s not even in the Kama Sutra.

YOU ARE WRONG!
ReplyDeleteYOU ARE WRONG!
YOU ARE WRONG!
History has shown that in-spite of people who think like you society moves forward becoming more inclusive and more socially responsible.
Working people need to be protected against employers who think like you do!
