WHAT PEOPLE CANNOT COMPLAIN ABOUT

Issues come up every day that might aggravate us, but we cannot complain about them because we are afraid we will look bad.  A perfect example of such a situation is when we look at the security detail for Maggie Daley, the wife of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

In a city where the police force is down by 2,000 officers, any personnel not on duty for city matters is a bone of contention for the police union.

When Daley retired this year, after serving as mayor for 22 years, he requested and received a full security detail of six active police officers.  No former mayor received security protection.  An outcry from Chicago citizens erupted about the cost of the detail to taxpayers.  When newly elected Mayor Rahm Emanuel took office on May 16, 2011, he said he would revisit the issue in the near future.

It was a difficult situation for Emanuel.  President Obama appointed Richard Daley’s brother, William, as his Chief of Staff to replace Emanuel.  Obviously, there was a conflict.

Emanuel recently announced that he would cut Mayor Daley’s security force from six active officers down to three.  Two of them would be made available to transport Maggie Daley back and forth from hospital and doctors’ visits. She has suffered a series of setbacks in her nearly 10-year battle against metastatic breast cancer.
When Emanuel was asked why Mrs. Daley needed to be transported by active on-duty police officers, he said that the former first lady “has been comfortable with (the detail) in the past, and, “Given where her health needs are, I thought it was an appropriate thing [to do] to make sure she’s comfortable,” he said. “I made that decision because, as she’s dealing with her health issues, getting to and from the hospital for her health care should not be a problem for her, and I didn’t want it to be a problem.”

Only one person in Chicago had the nerve to complain about the former first lady’s detail-- Fraternal Order of Police President Mike Shields.  He said, “At some point, Chicago needs to stop treating politicians like royalty.  Mayor Daley is a very wealthy man who can afford his own valet service. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for it.”

I bet Shields is being trashed on cancer blogs across the country.  However, he is correct in his assessment. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for Mrs. Daley’s transportation, just for her own comfort.

Millions of cancer patients have to arrange their own transportation.  While their battles deserve respect and praise, that does not mean that some patients deserve more luxuries than others.  But we will not complain.  Sometimes we should just keep our mouths shut.

  1. The problem with society now days is if you shut up things stay the way they are and if you say anything you are considered everything from: racist, insensitive, bigot etc. Some people don't want to hear the truth and prefer to walk around with a pink elephant in the room rather than acknowledge that there is something wrong. That’s how Obama got elected. With a city riddled with crime and the lack of police officers on the street, I think Daley's security detail should be the last thing on the list that this cash strapped city should worry about. Every day crime is becoming worse and worse. Today in the suntimes a teenager walking his girlfriend home was left in a coma. Two days ago teen shot on the basketball court. The list goes on and on. Daley is a rich man he can afford private security the citizens of Chicago can’t, that is why we should have the police on the streets and in neighborhoods where they belong; to protect and serve, not to protect and serve politicians and maybe some citizens

  2. Why doesn't she just hire a driver? Why do you need police to drive you? I'm not paying Chicago taxes...but if I were...I'd resent that and probably say so

  3. I don't live in Chicago anymore, so I don't have a right to say how the taxes are paid. My take on the matter is Maggie Daley sounds like a wonderful lady who has done much for Chicago. In her condition, she probably doesn't care who gets her to and from her treatment as long as she gets it. She doesn't need people fighting over her rights. Her husband would do well to avoid conflict and hire his own driver to take her, since it appers he can well afford to do so.

  4. I can only suppose that YOU too are now "being trashed on cancer blogs across the country." And ... it's very difficult for you to just keep your mouth shut!

  5. Today's blog is so true. My mom had cancer for as long as Maggie Daley, and I had to take off work to get her to docs and treatments such as radiation and chemo. Their was no Chicago Police car providing transportation for us, and my mother was a CPS teacher for nearly 30 years and worked her butt off for the kids of this city just as Maggie Daley has.

I adore Maggie, but police for her transportation to and from the hospital goes beyond the call of duty for Chicagoans while our kids are getting shot and beaten on the streets. The Daley's have plenty of money, they should have to use it just like us lesser-advantaged folks do!

    Pisses me off!
